The following new laws regarding the operation of snowmobiles became effective February 27, 2006:
Anyone who is at least 18 years of age may operate a snowmobile in NYS without any other qualification (such as a driver's license) except as defined by state and local laws regulating that operation.
Youthful operators ages 10-13 may only operate a snowmobile, on lands upon which snowmobiling is allowed, if they have complete the snowmobiling safety training course recognized by the State of New York and are accompanied by (within 500 ft...) a person who is at least 18 years of age.
Youthful operators ages 14-17 may operate a snowmobile, on lands upon which snowmobiling is allowed, without adult supervision if they have completed a snowmobile safety training course recognized by the State of New York and have been issued a snowmobile safety certificate by the Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Youths who do not hold this certificate are subject to the same restrictions as children under the age of 10 years.
Children under the age of 10 years may operate a snowmobile only on lands owned or leased by their parents or guardian.
