HISTORY OF THE LONG POND SNO SLED CLUB
The Long Pond Sno Sled Club was began in 1969 with approximately 150 members, mostly from the Long Pond and Croghan areas. Their main intent was to promote snowmobiling in the area. Some grooming and trail marking was done.
The club was incorporated in 1995. At that time the club had become more interested in grooming and trail maintenance than the social club it had became in previous years. We now have approximately 200 members from areas all over the state helping to support our grooming efforts.
We currently groom 77 miles in Lewis Co., 11 miles in Herkimer Co. and 10 miles in St. Lawrence Co. Our trail system runs from the Stillwater area through to Star Lake, all within the Adirondack Park.
We have owned several groomers over the years, upgrading when affordable. We began with homemade drags behind snowmobiles, now we currently own three Tucker Sno Cats with Mogul Master drags.
The club also purchased a rescue sled which is pulled by a 1996 Scandic. This is available to the Harrisville and Croghan Volunteer Fire Departments and the Lewis Co. Sheriff's Department for emergency use. The Scandic has also been loaned to the Sheriff's Department for use in trail patrols.
Charity work is performed every year by the Long Pond Sno Sled Club. Each December a Snowmobile Safety Course for youths between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age. We also donate to the local food pantries during the holiday season as well as a donation to the relief effort in New York City tragedy in September of 2001.
